eTT Aviation needed to reduce time-consuming manual regression testing as they expanded quality engineering practices.
Regression testing time has been reduced by 2 days
QA, Engineers, and Support can build testing skills
Quality has a scalable roadmap for automated testing
All innovative companies want their customers to soar, but eTT Aviation allows its clients to fly both figuratively and literally. A veteran-owned company, headquartered in Boise, Idaho, eTT Aviation specializes in cloud-based, scalable aviation flight and crew management, flight planning and dispatch, maintenance, accounting, and management information solutions that have revolutionized the way airlines achieve scheduling flexibility, compliance and control.
The suite of software supports tens of thousands of aviation professionals, allowing them to automate tasks, as well as reduce workload and process errors.
As an up-and-coming company with close ties to its customers, eTT Aviation’s Head of Software Quality Engineer (SQE) and Customer Support Iris Rivera works tirelessly to ensure that the flight management solutions, especially those related to flight, work flawlessly. She oversees a small quality team that includes engineers and quality assurance testing experts as well as customer service representatives, all of whom work together to ensure that their software is free of any bugs or issues.
In order to ensure the efficiency of the flight management software and maintain both the satisfaction and the safety of its customers, Iris’ goal earlier was to evolve the SQE and customer service department in order to create a modern, continuous, and automated testing environment – upholding the tenants of quality engineering or QE. A recent study found that teams who adopt QE have higher test coverage and more automated pipelines that ultimately yield stronger customer satisfaction.
The challenge, Iris noted, was that the team was relying on manual regression testing and while effective to a point, they were time-consuming and repetitive.
“Our goal was to create a proper testing environment – it was pertinent that we maintain a roadmap for test automation that can help us reduce repeatable tasks. This could free up time for our manual testers to do more exploratory testing and build up a framework for our testing process,” she said.
“We needed a quick solution that could help us create a custom automation framework that our engineers could adopt quickly and easily build into their development pipelines,” continued Iris.
That’s when Iris came across mabl and was impressed with its multifaceted low-code test automation platform: “We looked to mabl to help create the necessary structure and provide an easy way to integrate mabl testing processes within our own software development operations,” Iris explained.
Iris noted that while mabl offered her team a robust solution, it was also easy to learn and adopt. Admittedly, her team was initially wary of learning new testing strategies and changing tactics, but soon everyone warmed up to mabl’s intuitive testing solution. “Mabl gave us a knowledge base that provided all the precise steps – basically teaching us the way that our tests need to be run,” explained Iris.
“We're pretty close with our customers, and being a smaller company, we have that ability to communicate with our clients a little bit more directly, and also to solve their problems a little bit quicker than larger organizations,” noted Iris.
Iris particularly appreciates that her entire team – testers, engineers, and customer support – can build the testing skills required to help customers with any software issues thanks to mabl’s low-code user interface. This meant that even non-technical personnel could utilize mabl to support customers.
“When it comes to adopting more testing automation, having a low-code platform helps to remind our teams that new processes, while it may seem a little scary at first, is not as frightening as these tools are made to help everybody. Mabl has allowed our testers to help build quality from the start of our software development lifecycle. And that's the ultimate goal for quality assurance and quality engineering teams,” said Iris.
Once her team started using mabl for regression testing, Iris said the testing process was faster and more accurate, allowing her team to explore other forms of testing as well.
“Mabl has been helpful in identifying defects earlier in the development process, and cut our regression testing time -- it used to take us a whole week to run a regression between everybody and that time has been reduced by two days. This allows our testers to perform more exploratory testing and find additional defects that way.”
Iris has been working with mabl for over a year, and the solution has been a windfall for the company. “Mabl is so scalable and has saved our team so much time! Now we don’t have to run those repeatable tasks over and over again, and let me tell you, those tasks become monotonous. Now my team remains engaged and focuses on tasks that, frankly, are more interesting. This has really helped my team to regard their jobs as engaging and fun!”
